Group H: Forewing with longitudinal and oblique pale streaks and fuscous scales
11 species
The fuscous scale are most often found along the margins of the pale streaks, sometimes overlying the pale streaks to some extent, but not sufficiently to obscure them. Some segregation according to size is possible with largest 4 species usually being identifiable on external (antennal) features.

Species that may be looked for here but are keyed in other groups
C.betulella (Group B) is very variable, but differs from species in Group H in having a white ground colour.
C.sternipennella and C.saxicolella (Group E) have streaks overlaid with fuscous scales but the streaks may be sufficiently apparent to look in Group H
C.currucipennella (Group G) may have the coloured oblique streaks marked fuscous in contrast to the ochreous longitudinal streaks

1. Forewing pale yellow, falcate at apex; base of antenna thickened with projecting scales, scape with a long tuft
1a Base of antenna clothed with yellowish projecting scales, apical ¼ of antenna white > 37.061 Coleophora lixella
1b Base of antenna clothed with grey-fuscous projecting scales, antenna barred fuscous to apex > 37.062 Coleophora tricolor
1b Base of antenna clothed with grey-fuscous projecting scales, antenna barred fuscous to apex > 37.062 Coleophora tricolor
2. Antenna white, finely spotted blackish on underside, fw>6.5mm*
2a White streaks broader than ochreous markings
> 37.105 Coleophora nutantella 2b White streaks narrower than ochreous markings > 37.092 Coleophora galbulipennella These two can be reasonably reliably distinguished by habitat, C.galbulipennella being found only on coastal shingle in east Kent. Doubtful specimens may require genital dissection |
*The antenna of C.virgaureae is very variable and may appear almost completely white, but is a smaller species.
Males
2a Sacculus with a distinct acute anterior projection; aedeagus with two prongs each with a proximally directed spur > C.nutantella
2b Sacculus without a distinct anterolateral angle; aedeagus with two exceptionally long prongs, each with a small apical tooth > C.galbulipennella
2b Sacculus without a distinct anterolateral angle; aedeagus with two exceptionally long prongs, each with a small apical tooth > C.galbulipennella
Females
2a Ostium arising from a "V"-shaped notch in posterior margin of ostial plate; antrum distinctly broadest posterior to anterior margin of ostial plate, hyaline for a short distance anterior to anterior margin of ostial plate, then narrower and sclerotised again to junction with ductus bursae just anterior to anterior end of anterior apophyses; no spiculate section of ductus bursae > C.nutantella
2b Ostium arising from a "U"-shaped notch in posterior margin of ostial plate; antrum only slightly broader posterior to anterior margin of ostial plate, long, sclerotised for its entire length; bilinear spiculate section of ductus bursae from junction with antrum > C.galbulipennella |
