Genital dissection required to distinguish from other species in Group C
Genital dissection required to distinguish from other species in Group C
Most similar in external appearance to 37.007 Coleophora flavipennella, but this usually has a pale costa and is keyed in Group D. These two are readily distinguished in both sexes by examination of the genitalia.
Male genitalia
Vinculum a V-shaped arc, very slightly produced anteriorly; the ventral flap of the saccus is so extensive that it tethers the margins of the vinculum almost to their posterodorsal ends, forming a triangular sheet covering the anterior half of the valvae (This flap makes it impossible to set the valvae with the sacculi anterior). Tegumen tubular, short, figure of 8 shaped. Gnathos broad, transverse. Sacculus a narrow rolled bar, arranged such that the lateral margin is much longer than the anterior margin (because of the difficulty of obtaining a standard set position, the anterior and lateral margins (as defined in the introductory notes) both appear medial in the image below left); anterolateral angle smoothly rounded; posterior half of lateral margin and adjacent inner surface of sacculus strongly dentate-scobinate; posterolateral angle pointed, appearing as a short posterior projection; posterior margin straight. Outer surface of sacculus attached to the vinculum. Valvula largely free, attached to inner surface of sacculus by a sclerotised band; posterior margin extends medially as a fairly weakly-sclerotised costa, which attenuates as it extends further medially to fuse with its partner in the midline, forming a complete transtilla. Juxta extends anteriorly as a laterally compressed tube from junction of anterior ends of sacculi to ventral surface of base of tunica. Tunica simple, very long, curved, eccentrically sclerotised towards apex, the right lateral border being strongly sclerotised and produced into a slightly curved (to the right) apical tooth; contains a single short tapered cornutus near its base. Vesica short, straight, with hemicircumferential sclerotisation for its whole length (naturally the sclerotised wall is anterior, anatomically it is dorsal); no separate annulus; no cornuti in vesica.
Male genital key: Tunica simple; without a comb of cornuti in the vesica; inner surface of lateral half sacculus dentate; tunica with an apical tooth and a short subbasal cornutus.
