a. Introitus vaginae not identifiable or, if identifiable, not strongly sclerotised
All three of these species have a medium-length, bilinear/circumferential densely spiculate, posterior ¼ to ⅓ of the ductus bursae, with a "tail" of about the same length anterior to this. These areas of spiculation differ in detail, but the species are more easily separable on other features.
ai. Ostium central; ostial plate much broader at anterior than posterior margin > 37.081 Coleophora therinella
aii. Ostium posterior from a narrow incision in posterior margin; ostial plate elongate; introitus forms a pouch from which ductus bursae originates on its left hand side > 37.082 Coleophora asteris
aiii. Ostium posterior, "U"-shaped from an incision in posterior margin; ostial plate quadrate, a pair of sclerotised lines from either side of ostium towards anterior margin of ostial plate > 37.088 Coleophora atriplicis

b. Sclerotised loop of ductus bursae anterior to and longer than the densely spiculate section > 37.085 Coleophora squamosella
Ostial plate elongate; ostium from a deep narrow incision in posterior margin |
c. Spiculate section of ductus bursae without a long "tail"
In both these species the introitus vaginae extends for about its own diameter in length anterior to the anterior margin of the ostial plate In all remaining species in B2 there is a long "tail" anterior to a circumferential or bilinear spiculate section ci. Densely spiculate section of ductus bursae short (about as long as ostial plate) and very dense; thorn signum moderately large > 37.076 Coleophora sylvaticella cii. Densely spiculate section of ductus bursae medium length (about twice as long as ostial plate) and only moderately dense; thorn signum very small > 37.079 Coleophora aestuariella |
d. Introitus vaginae long (extending about the length of the ostial plate anterior to the anterior margin of the ostial plate)
di. Densely spiculate section of ductus bursae longer than introitus vaginae
> 37.086 Coleophora versurella Introitus vaginae angled to the left with its left margin slightly concave dii. Densely spiculate section of ductus bursae shorter than introitus vaginae > 37.087 Coleophora vestianella Introitus vaginae directed to the left, left margin smoothly convex ending in a blunt spur. |
e. Introitus vaginae short (extending only slightly anterior to anterior margin of ostial plate)
ci. Ostium central, arising from a deep incision in the posterior margin of the ostial plate > 37.080 Coleophora virgaureae
